The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, also popularly known as Obamacare, has probably generated more questions and controversy than virtually any other law in recent memory. Because it is such a bipartisan issue, with politicians on either side trumpeting their position as the most beneficial and correct, finding clear-cut answers to some important questions can be a little difficult.

Here are some of the top questions people have, as well as the most applicable and correct answers we could find.

Will Obamacare Cost Me Extra Money?

Depends. If you already have health insurance than no, you would not pay any additional premiums. If you do not have healthcare, you will need to select a plan, which will cost you money in premiums. These premiums, however, are likely to be lower than traditional premiums.

What Benefits Will I Receive If I already Have Insurance?


While your insurance itself will not change, you will receive a whole host of benefits thorough preventive care services. These include screenings for different kinds of diseases, such as vaccinations and mammograms. In addition, Obamacare will make it illegal to deny coverage based on a preexisting conditions.

What Are Exchanges?

Under Obamacare, insurance providers will compete with each other for your business. This is accomplished through online marketplaces, called exchanges, which are separated by state. Exchanges are only available for people who are unable to obtain other coverage either through a job or government program..

What If I Don’t Want To Get Insurance?

If you have no coverage whatsoever, and do not want to participate in the programs offered through Obamacare, expect to pay a penalty. Currently the rate is set at around one percent of your total income, with this rate set to more than double by 2016.
