Robinhood: Stock market trading hits the 21st century

Say hello to Robinhood – an elegant and simple new iOS app that lets you trade stocks for free. Unlike traditional brokerages, who charge somewhere between $7 and $10 per trade – the Robinhood app lets you do the trades in a few simple taps – for free. It has already been adopted by half a million people but was not available in the Apple App Store until today.

Built to appeal to the younger generation of investors, it raised $13 million in September from various investors including Google Ventures and Andreessen Horowitz. The app has a simple interface that lets you buy and sell stocks with a few taps. It’s elegant minimal design include charts that show historical performances for any particular stock and the app color changes from red to green when the market is open for trading. It also features a home screen that shows you an overview of your entire portfolio.

The lack of fees per trade will be a particularly tempting feature, but history shows that the majority of actively traded stocks do not perform as well as the overall stock market. That said, Robinhood is the first usable stock trading app that is both beautiful to look at and extremely functional. The company says that the Android version will be out during the first half of 2015, in the mean time – Robinhood is well worth a look if you have an iOS device are actively managing your stock portfolio.
